Celebrating those who are creating change

The Martha Farrell Award has always felt like a deeply important award to me. Perhaps the first reason is that it is an honest search-a search for those who have dared to question the dominant currents of society.

People who did not simply surrender themselves to the direction or speed of the mainstream, but chose to move against the current. Through their own narratives, imagination, creations, interventions and leadership, they have strengthened the possibility of another world.

And doing so has never been easy. Many of them have had to confront struggles, resistance and the tremors that come with challenging what is considered normal, established or unquestionable. They have had to fight battles with courage, conviction and, quite literally, with their guts.

The Martha Farrell Award seeks out such people with honesty. More importantly, it creates a process of collective recognition—a space where those who have contributed to social change are seen, acknowledged and celebrated. There is something deeply political about that. When you work towards changing society, you often have to face the resistance of the very structures you are trying to transform. By recognising such journeys, the Martha Farrell Award strengthens the transformative intent behind social change.

For me, this journey is also deeply personal. I feel honoured to have once been part of this process as a Most Promising Individual, and today, as a member of the Jury, to be able to contribute my own thoughts, critical perspectives and experiences to this remarkable process. To everyone who has been part of the Martha Farrell Award process—the applicants, nominees, winners and everyone whose work has entered this space—my heartfelt salute. You are not merely receiving the stature of this award. You are the ones who create its stature.

And perhaps that is what makes the Martha Farrell Award so powerful: it does not merely celebrate individuals. It recognises the collective courage, imagination and persistence behind the many journeys that are quietly, and sometimes fiercely, trying to make our world more just.
